Graduate Council Minutes – March 30, 2007

 

Attendance: K.Bisbee, D. King, J. LeFevre, R. Skolnik, W. Silky, J. Smith, D. Vanouse

 

  1. Approval of Agenda. The agenda was approved as presented.
  2. Approval of Minutes.  March 16, 2007 were approved as written.
  3. Dean’s Report.
  • The Graduate Studies Office will be reorganizing with the retirement of Kevi McNeilly.  The addition of an NTP to the office staff has been approved.  It is proposed that this person will be responsible for the areas of recruiting, marketing, public relations, and updating of the website.
  • There is a need to look for new graduate enrollment.  It is hoped that the Metro Center will assist in this endeavor as it will be located in a large population area.  SUNY is urging campuses to address the needs of the aging workforce through classes, certificate programs, and/or workshops.  It is planned that the new Metro center will be situated in an easy access area and ready to do this.
  • Work on the Professional Science Master’s is still continuing.  Currently 11 campuses and 30 programs have shown interest in the developing a program or assisting in the development of such a program.
  • Updates of programs in Albany.  Combined School Leader and Building Management Program is still in Albany awaiting approval, but it has been found.
  1. Chair’s Report. D. Vanouse shared a written copy of his report to Faculty Assembly.  It included definitions for the IP and I grades along with a series of courses approved by the Council.
  2. Old Business.
  • EDU 506 Use of Technology for Professional Development.  J. Smith presented the course that is a required course in the MSED Curriculum and Instruction Program.  After a brief discussion, the course was approved as written.
  • AED 550 Adolescence Art Practicum & Student Teaching.  J. Smith presented this course that is a requirement of the MAT Art program.  After a brief discussion, the course was approved as written.
  1. New Business.  Academic Reorganization – a new school.  A discussion was held

about the pros and cons of having another school within the College.  The discussion centered on the currently informal proposal to have a School of Communications and the Arts.
