Attendance: Abraham,Bisbee, LeFevre, Klatsky, King,
Perdiguero, Silky, Smith, Vanouse
- Minutes of February 3, 2006. Abraham moved approval;
Silky seconded. The minutes were approved as written.
- Graduate Dean’s Report. Dr. King reported on the following
items:
- On February 9, 2006, the Graduate Directors met with Cynthia Clabough and
four of her students to begin the process of developing brochures for the
individual graduate programs in each department. Now smaller groups of
individuals are meeting with these students to further this project. Ben
Patterson, a graduate intern has pulled together a large amount of detail that
could be utilized in these brochures.
- Update on Program Initiatives: CPS Community Counseling Licensure is being
considered; the MAT Math is at the Provost level; the Psych/HCI is still in
Albany awaiting approval; and CPS is looking a other possible options for
programs.
- The Graduate Studies Office and CPS are considering a graduate mentoring
program designed to encourage undergraduates to apply to graduate schools.
- Marketing of the graduate programs is still in the forefront with
discussions with Continuing Education and design for improvements of the
graduate websites.
- Dean King posed the question: Can someone earn a BS degree and an MBA
degree in different areas at the same time? A brief discussion on this
topic was held later in the meeting. It seemed to be the consensus that
as long as all degree requirements are met with this is possible. SUNY
appears to permit this.
- Chair’s Report.
- All of the CSC courses approved in November have been corrected and
reported out at Faculty Assembly.
- Mary Loe is concerned about the approval of graduate courses sometimes
by-passing the library. There seems to be no specific process for
including the library as there is for the undergraduate courses going through
UCC. The question of whether or not Graduate Council should have an
electronic process for submitting courses was asked. The consensus seemed
to be that this would be an appropriate goal to work toward for this semester,
to begin submission in fall 2006. Further discussion is
needed so this topic should be an item on a future agenda.
- D. Vanouse distributed a partial list of Graduate Scholarships that must be
decided by members of Graduate Council. Due to lack of applicants, the
deadline date for submission of applications has been moved to March 1.
- Old Business
- GRT 520 Social Gerontology – No one was in attendance to
present the course. It will be placed on a later agenda.
The following courses were presented by
Bisbee. The courses are being updated with new titles emphasizing
engineering and digital photography as well as updated references, to meet the
needs of new state certification requirements.

statements in the Evaluation section, Bisbee agreed to restate the
section. The course was approved.

- Discussion on the Awarding of Two Graduate Degrees.
Dean King presented the SUNY policy that indicates that each institution should
have a policy about this indicating such items as the number of overlap or
double-dip hours permitted, admission requirements, etc. Currently Oswego
has no policy. Smith indicated that this has happened in the Curriculum
and Instruction Department. This department has used the off-campus
number of semester hours as a guide for number of coursed permitted to
double-dip. All agreed that this topic needs more discussion on a later
agenda. Meanwhile the Graduate Office will keep Graduate Coordinators
informed it is occurring in their programs.
- Graduate Course Submission Process – Vanouse distributed a
copy of UCC procedures. P. Russo, Chair of UCC will be invited to the
next meeting when this is on the agenda.
Next meeting is March 3, 2006
