Attendance: Bisbee, King, Klatsky, Pan, Perdiguera, Silky, Smith,
Vanouse.
- Approval of Minutes of April 7, 2006. Silky moved approval as
written; Klatsky seconded. The motion was passed.
- Dean’s Report. Dr. King reported the following items:
- Concerns are being raised in Albany about Oswego’s Memorandum of
Understanding which states that acceptable GMAT scores for applicants to the
MBA are in the 400 range. Albany wants a minimum score of 500 on the GMAT
for admission to SUNY programs. The School of Business and Dr. King are
currently working on wording of a new policy which will indicate that over a
defined period of time, the acceptable score on the GMAT for admission to the
MBA program will be raised to 500. At this time, there is less concern
about the GRE’s. However, Dr. King will be working with Graduate
Coordinators to develop a policy indicating that applicants with GRE scores
below 500 will only be admitted conditionally unless there are extenuating
circumstances.
- Graduate Brochures. These are still in process, and there will be a
graduate intern available throughout the summer to assist departments in
completing the task.
- The College is planning a Graduate Studies Week during Fall 2006: October
30- November 3. Throughout the week there will be workshops for
undergraduate student to attend. Day and evening scheduling will be
planned for these workshops. Meantime the Graduate Office personnel has
plans to attend a larger number of Graduate Fairs over a more encompassing area
of NY state in the fall.
- Progress is being made in locating a Syracuse site for graduate
programs.
- Dr. King is hoping to fund more Graduate Assistants for the future.
Currently Oswego has 70. This is a relatively large number for a
comprehensive campus, but more are needed as new programs are offered.
- The need for graduate content courses was discussed briefly. These
are needed by the students in the Curriculum and Instruction program as NYS
professional certification regulations require 12sh of content related courses
minimum.
- Professional Science Masters (PSM). This is a master’s degree that many
industrial employers would like to have available for their employees.
The Sloan Foundation is active in financing such programs especially when there
is evidence of cooperation between business, industry, and the
university. Currently a model is being developed between central NY
businesses, industries and the SUNY campuses in order to seek support of the
Sloan Foundation. If the model is supported the central office for such
programs would be on the SUNY Oswego campus.
3. Council Chair Report.
- Vanouse reported that the revisions to CPS 509 were approved.
- In addition, Graduate Council reaffirmed the course outline proposal
format that was approved in April 2004, and the Council is working on
developing a procedure for submitting revised course outlines.
4. Old Business.
- Proposed Policy on Awarding Two Degrees at the Graduate Level. This
was deferred again. It appears from the survey of other units that is
being completed that they are following other policies.
- Procedures for Submitting Course Revisions. The draft was reviewed
and approved with revisions. J. Smith will make the revisions and forward
them to Kevi McNeilly in the Graduate Studies Office for distribution to
departments.
- Semester Add/Drop Policy. After discussion concerning the number of
classes a student could attend prior to adding, there seemed to be a general
consensus that the policy was okay as it is much the same as it currently is
except for the last three days of the add period being the option of the
instructor; the policy will go back to Academic Policies Council for its
support.
- Psy 505 Topics in Abnormal Psychology: Trauma and Loss. G. Klatsky
presented the proposal and rationale. Following a brief discussion, the
course was approved pending editorial revisions of the outline format.
- BA (Psychology)/MBA (Business). This item was deferred as many
members did not have the materials.
5. New Business
- LIT 515 Teaching Young Adult Literature. Deferred to next
meeting.
- Art Department change in admission statement. The following catalog
admission statement was approved for the Art Department:Students with less than
71hours in art or an allied subject (subject to approval of the Graduate
Committee) are required to take supplemental undergraduate studio courses
before they begin the M.A. degree program. “We require that all the
students in the Fine Arts oriented area of the program be full time (nine to
twelve hours per semester).” The program coordinator will consult
with the graduate faculty member in the area of the student’s main interest to
make this judgment.
The meeting adjourned at 9:20.
J. Smith recorded the minutes.
