Graduate Council Minutes - December 1, 2006

 

Attendance: D. King, G. Klatsky, C. Mack, J. Perdiquero, R. Scolnik, J. Smith, D. Vanouse. Guest- C. Baltus.

 

Approval of Minutes: Minutes of November 17, 2006 were approved as written.

 

Dean’s Report:  D. King reported on the following items:

 

  • A proposal for the Metro Center lease has been sent out to landlords in Syracuse.  D. King will be working with Graduate Directors to develop proposals of the courses that will initially be offered at the center.

 

  • Professional Science Master’s Degree is still a possibility as the Sloan Foundation is still interested in working with SUNY and NYS industry to develop some interdisciplinary Math, Science, and Technology MS degrees.  It is hoped that Oswego can play a significant role in this.

 

  • Currently there is a big demand of Certificate Programs of 9-18sh.  D. King will be working with Graduate Directors to develop some programs for Oswego. There is $10,000 dollars available for Festa Fellowships in leadership for summer 2007.  Graduate Directors have been urged to find the kinds of leaders that might be willing to participate in this program as well as some full time students who would be excellent recipients of these fellowships.

 

  • Graduate Assistantships will be categorized in the future: GA’s will be the largest group with more general responsibilities; TA’s will be dedicated to classroom instruction; RA’s will be research assistants; and SA’s will receive summer assistance for research projects.  The deadline to apply for RA’s and SA’s is December 15 and March 1 for the GA’s and TA’s.

 

  • Information about Graduate enrollment was distributed.

 

  • Progress Report on newly proposed programs –
    • Psychology BA/MBA is being reviewed at SUNY; there are some minor revisions to be made.

 

  • MAT Math is ready to be sent to SUNY.  All “pieces and parts” have been put together.

 

  • CPS CAS Certificate program is at SUNY.  There are some revisions that must be made; No major problems are foreseen.

 

  • MAT English is awaiting the Off-Campus review report that will come in January.

 

Chair’s Report:  D. Vanouse brought the following issues to the table:

 

  • VTP 551 Curriculum Integration & Differentiating Instruction in Career &

Technical Education was reported out at Faculty Assembly.

 

  • The topic of defining a prerequisite is being discussed on several venues on campus in order to have a program in Banner that enforces prerequisites.  APC is working on developing a definition that will be brought to Graduate Council.

 

  • Input on the Conflict & Ethics Task Force proposal was invited.  Council members have been working with their individual departments on this.

 

  • The DRAFT guidelines for Campus Academic Research Centers was called to the Council’s attention and briefly discussed.  The Provost would like input from interested parties.

 

  • The first Spring 2007 meeting will be February 2, 2007 at 800 in 302 Poucher Hall.  The following spring meetings are tentative scheduled for February 16; March 2, 16, and 30; April 13 and 27; and May 11 if needed.

 

Course Outlines:

 

  • MAE 508 Introduction to History of Mathematics.  C. Baltus introduce the course proposal.  He indicated that this course is directed at math education students who are coming from an elementary or childhood program.  J. Smith moved approval; G. Klatsky seconded. The course was approved.

 

  • MAT 553 Mathematical Modeling and Technology for the Secondary Teacher.  C. Baltus presented the proposal and briefly indicated the purpose.  G. Klatsky moved approval; J. Smith seconded.  The course was approved.

 

  • MAT 580 Technology & Problem Solving in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom. .  C. Baltus presented the proposal and briefly indicated the purpose.  After a brief discussion, G. Klatsky moved approval; J. Smith seconded.  The course was approved.

 

IP” grade for research courses.  This is an option for the “I” grade for research and project type courses in which students may take more than a semester to complete.  It will be discussed at the next meeting.
