Faculty Assembly Minutes
December 9, 2002

 

Members Absent: P. Rosenbaum, P. Weber (see minutes of 2/24/03), G. Graham, W. Silky, D. Baer, C. Echelbarger

Meeting was called to order at 3:15 PM.

  1. Approval of Agenda
  2. At this meeting we are approving the minutes from the November 4th FA meeting, not the minutes for the October 21st FA meeting. Item number 2 on the proposed program in Human Computer Interaction was dropped from the agenda under New Business. The revised agenda was approved unanimously.

  3. Approval of minutes for November 4, 2002
  4. The minutes were approved unanimously.

  5. Report on the Capital Campaign - Kevin Mahaney
  6. Kevin Mahaney gave a report regarding the Capital Campaign and answered questions from the Assembly (see attached report).

  7. FA Chair's Report - D. King
  8. D. King began by mentioning that the first FA meeting of the next semester is scheduled for January 27th. There will also be a General Faculty meeting on February 10th and a FA Executive Board meeting on February 3rd. Early next semester there will be reports given by Nick Lyons on the SUNY budget and Jerry DeSantis regarding campus capital projects and renovations.

    He gave a brief report on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting held last Friday in New York City with Provost Salins. It began with discussion on a vote of no confidence in Provost Salins over his handling of General Education and other matters. D. King and others drafted a proposal, which will remove the Provost's office from any review of General Education programs or courses. Provost Salins approved their compromise proposal and it will probably be sent to the campus presidents next week.

    In the Fall of 2003 the Plenary meeting of SUNY Faculty Senate will be held at SUNY Oswego. It has been confirmed for October 23-25, 2003.

  9. Reports of Councils, Committees and Task Forces
  10. Graduate Council met on December 6th and approved the MS Ed Letter of Intent in VTP for a new program in Family and Consumer Services Education. They passed MBA 530: Employment Law. Many VTP courses were passed as well, they are:

    VTP 505: Vocational Education Practica

    VTP 507: Foundations of Vocational Education

    VTP 509: Vocational Curriculum Development

    VTP 512: Methods of Teaching Vocational Subjects

    VTP 513: Instructional Assessment in Vocational Education

    VTP 514: Instructional Management and Technology

    VTP 525: Learning Theories in Vocational Education

    VTP 544: Serving Special Needs Learners in Voc. Ed.

    VTP 545: Language Arts in the Vocational Classroom

    VTP 585: Vocational Supervised Student Teaching-I

    VTP 590: Vocational Supervised Student Teaching-II

    Academic Policies Council met on December 6th and approved the proposed change to the Technology Education BS program. There have been changes to the Management, Accounting, and Finance majors. They approved the requirement of C- or better to courses that fulfill the Wellness and Management major. They will meet again on January 31, 2003.

    Information Technology Council met and continued to discuss their functions and relations with CTAB and the Chief Technology Officer on the campus.

    Priorities and Planning Council has been discussing the budget, Nick Lyons gave a report at their meeting. Issues related to searches and early retirements were also discussed.

    Undergraduate Curriculum Committee reported out many changes and new courses (see attached report).

  11. Unfinished Business
    1. Election for vacancy on UCC
    2. Paul Voninski was unanimously elected to the Social Sciences seat on the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.

    3. Election of one faculty and one professional staff representative to Student Association Senate
    4. This position is still available.

    5. Election of one semester(Spring '03) sabbatical replacement for B.Beyerbach on Priorities and Planning Council
    6. Audrey Hurley was unanimously elected.

    7. Proposed Bylaw amendment Article XXIII-Proposed Undergraduate Curriculum Council

This proposed amendment was reviewed and discussed by the Assembly, incorporating secondary amendments approved last time. The main amendment creating the Undergraduate Curriculum Council was approved by a vote of 33 yes, 1 no, and 3 abstentions (see attached amendment to the Bylaws).

  1. New Business
    1. Proposed Bylaw Amendment (Article XXIII)

The proposed Bylaw Amendment (Article XXIII) on the Academic Outreach Council will be placed on the agenda next semester.
