Students will work in a position in a music setting for the purposes of testing academic learning in a work situation. Prerequisites: Acceptance in the Experience-Based Education Program and permission of the department. Offering: irregular Semester_Hours: 1-5 Justification: College students need an opportunity to relate what they have been doing in an academic setting to the professional world through a comprehensive training program that will test their proposed interest in a developmental and systematic manner. An internship gives the student an opportunity to test classroom learning under the supervision of on-campus and off-campus professionals. Course_Objectives: The student will be able to: relate formal academic training in music to an “in-life” mode, further develop competencies needed in the area of specialization, test competencies needed for the area of specialization, determine whether the area of specialization is one that he/she will pursue as a professional career. Course_Description: The course content is determined by the nature of the specialization, and by the student under the advisement of the Music Department and the Experience Based Education staff. Highly individualized, the project will require that each student meet and complete all requirements set forth by the academic advisor and the employer. Each student will be expected to meet all the requirements of the position he or she assumes, including the general and specific requirements of the employer or work supervisor. In addition, the student in conjunction with the faculty advisor and the Experience Based Education staff will develop a learning contract focused upon the relationship between the academic program and the work situation. The method of instruction will be determined by the nature of the learning contract developed by the student and his team of advisors from the Music Department and from the Experience Based Education staff. In addition, input from the employer will constitute a major aspect of the instruction where appropriate. The student will meet periodically with each of the above named sources for systematic consultation and evaluation. The final written or oral statement (research paper-concerts-teaching) will be required of all students. The completed project will be evaluated by the Music Department advisor(s), the Experience Based Education staff, and by the employerIt is expected that the student, under advisement by the Music Department, Experience Based Education staff, and the employer, will know those texts and materials that relate directly to the project, and will also become familiar with those texts and materials that are allied with the project.
