Students participating in the program will be provided with a unique insight to the inner workings of the industry that is impossible to achieve in the classroom. Prerequisites: Students must be at least a junior, minimum GPA in the major of at least 2.75, and present letters of recommendation from faculty for acceptance into the program. SS - every Summer: Yes Semester Hours: 3 SH Justification for course: Hollywood Field Experience offers students who are nearing graduation an opportunity to explore various career paths by providing them access to professionals in these fields. This opportunity helps to bridge the gap between the academic environment of the campus, and the professional environment they will enter upon graduation. This program will enhance course offerings to students majoring in broadcasting, journalism, public relations, cinema studies, and theater. Because of the distant location and because the students will be visiting workplace sites during business hours, the class size will be limited to 18 students. Course Objectives: Students participating in Hollywood Field Experience might expect to: Discover career options and fields previously unknown to them. Have a greater understanding of various career options, and the level of skill and knowledge required. Observe professionals in their work environments. Be better prepared to identify skills required in a given profession. Will understand professional standards and methods required for success in various fields. Establish mentor/mentee relationships with professionals they encounter. Begin a networking process within the professional arena to assist them in pursuing their career path. Course Description: Hollywood Field Experience is designed to help students understand the professional work environment of their chosen fields of study. The methods of instruction would include: lectures, discussions, question and answer sessions, demonstrations, site visits, tours, and participatory events. As means of evaluation, each student would submit a research paper and a daily journal. Although the schedule will change from year to year to accommodate the schedules of the participating professionals, a typical offering could be expected to include the following subjects: Day 1 - Marketing and promotions Day 2 - Broadcast journalism for major markets Day 3 - Actors, agents and managers Day 4 - Motion picture production Day 5 - Digital post-production and effects Day 6 - Screenwriting for television and film Day 7 - Public relations Day 8 - Program development and scheduling Day 9 - Television production and direction Day 10- Newspaper/magazine publishing Resources: None anticipated Bibliography: Honthaner, E.L.(2005).
