How do students register for SLN courses?Just like any other course, students register through the Registrar's Office of the campus offering the course. If it is an Oswego Course, they must register through the Oswego Registrar's Office, using the same process and calendar as with any course. This pertains to the payment for the course as well.
What is the cost of an SLN Course? The tuition and fees are the same for an Oswego SLN course as they are for any Oswego credit-bearing course. The difference in fees is based on whether it is a graduate or undergraduate course, but this is not an SLN difference.
How do students access the SLN course? They must first register for the course through the college offering the course. Then they go on the Internet (through Internet Explorer or Netscape) and proceed to the SLN website (http://SLN.SUNY.EDU) and click on the link for "Registered Students" in order to request a password. Once they have the password, they use the SLN website to access their course.
When do courses start? All of Oswego's SLN courses officially begin the first day of the semester (example: January 26 for the Spring 2004 semester). In addition, most of our online courses are accessible one week prior to the official start date of the semester. This allows students the opportunity to get into the virtual course and learn how to navigate their way around the web and the course so that they are more confident once the course actually starts.
Why is Oswego putting courses on the web? Numerous students have found that work or family/community obligations prevent them from attending a course at the same time each week or from commuting to Oswego. This is a way to increase student access to our courses; it is also an opportunity to teach courses with methodologies that can increase student learning.
Do I have to be online at a specific time? No. SLN courses are asynchronous. That means you can log onto the web any time that is convenient for you -- morning, noon or night. However, instructors may tell students that they are expected to log on a certain number of times per week (example-3 times/week) and that they need to participate each time they log on (e.g., submit an assignment or participate in the discussion). Each credit-bearing course runs 15 weeks in the fall or spring, and 12 weeks in the summer. EVERYTHING is done online; there are NO face-to-face meetings.
Am I really part of the class? Yes. All faculty design the learning experience in a way that challenges you to do your best as an individual; many courses have group activities that build a very strong learning community.
How do I get my textbooks if I am from out of the area? The College Store at Oswego State is ready and willing to ship the books to students. Each course that requires a text, will list what materials are required; it usually contains a hotlink and an email address for students to use to contact the College Store. There is a shipping fee to send books.
How do I know if the course will transfer to my college? The best thing to do, whether you are transferring a course to Oswego or from Oswego, is to work with an advisor from the college or university that you intend to graduate from in order to determine if the course meets the requirements for your degree program.
Where do I get the course description? The easiest way to find Oswego course descriptions is to check current semester classes offered at the myoswego web site.
You can also find course descriptions through the SLN web site by going into the Prospective Student link then select the course list for the semester you are interested in (usually only the current semester and the previous semester are at this site, though other links do exist). You will then need to search by campus or discipline.
