We offer enrollment in each individual seminar however, it is strongly recommended to enroll in the entire Succession Planning Certificate Program to ensure adequate knowledge acquisition. Participating in the two full-day Core Seminars and two half-day Electives will provide you with a Succession Planning Certificate of Completion, which will enable you to address most of the key components of an integrated succession plan for your organization.
Elective: Growing Organizational Leaders October 10 - 8 AM to 12 PM
An essential dimension of succession planning systems is based on the assessment of performance results, an individual’s potential, and a set of leadership and organizational competencies valued by the organization. This module provides an overview of current organizational trends and activities in leadership development.
In this module participants will be able to:
- Create and define a leadership model for their organization.
- Identify core competencies that support their leadership model.
- Define the elements of an integrated leadership system destined for succession planning.
Elective: Needs Assessment: Identifying Employee Development Needs October 24 - 8 AM to 12 PM
Many times developmental planning ends when an employee’s goals have been clarified for the year. In order to keep energy around those plans, it is important to focus the employee’s attention, identify daily actions, and help integrate new learning, sustain growth and accommodate change.
In this module participants will be able to:
- Identify measurable competencies.
- Determine appropriate methods for assessing employee competencies.
- Make decisions on whether to use off-the-shelf or customized assessment tools.
- Evaluate the assessment’s success over the short and long-term.
- Create an employee developmental plan based on assessment results for succession planning purposes.
Core Seminar: Succession Planning Basics November 7 - 8 AM to 4 PM
When designing a succession planning system, it is important to make sure the system is appropriate for your organization. This module will provide participants with a comprehensive overview and help assess what type of system will best meet the needs of their organization.
In this module, participants will be able to:
- Define succession planning, its purpose, benefits and strategic direction.
- Identify the key components of a succession plan.
- List the necessary roles and responsibilities for planning and implementation.
- Identify who needs to be on the management team.
- Determine how Human Resources must be seen as a strategic partner.
- Assess the benefits of using external consultants.
- Define what type of management support and resources are required to successfully implement a succession planning system.
Elective: Coaching Top Performers November 21 - 8 AM to 12 PM
The best way to develop top performers is through on-the-job “stretch” assignments and one-on-one coaching. Coaching helps individuals to maximize their learning and growth by having an opportunity to receive and reflect on feedback.
In this module participants will be able to:
- Define coaching and the benefits to both the employee and organization.
- Identify and act upon coaching opportunities.
- Establish a coaching partnership/relationship and clarify expectations.
- Use a Coaching Map to guide coaching conversations and interactions.
- Build a developmental plan that is specific, motivating and in alignment with your succession plan.
Elective: Retaining and Attracting Top Performers December 5 - 12 PM to 4 PM
At the foundation of succession planning is the definition and identification of talent–what it looks like, who has it, who needs to develop it, and how it can best be developed. The challenge is defining what “talent” means, in terms of the needs of the organization.
In this module participants will be able to:
- Determine who your top performers are and how “at risk” they are for turnover.
- Conduct a retention interview with employees to uncover motivations.
- Document and evaluate results of the retention interviews.
- Develop a retention plan for key employees, focusing on those items within your control as an integral member of the succession planning team.
Capstone Core Seminar: Creating and Presenting Your Succession Plan December 19 - 8 AM to 4 PM
The goal of this seminar is to support participants who participated in the certificate program series in creating a succession planning system that fits the needs of their organization. Creating a comprehensive plan will enable participants to formally outline precisely what they believe an ideal solution would entail. Participants will have the opportunity to present their succession planning solutions to the class. Their peers will act as a mock senior management audience to ensure each presentation addresses the needs of a particular organization.
In this module participants will be able to:
- Complete a detailed Succession Planning proposal.
- Support their proposal with examples and “best practices “ used by other organizations and from knowledge gained throughout the certificate program series.
- Enhance their succession plan proposal by giving and receiving feedback.
- Gain confidence in presenting their plan to internal decision-makers.
