What is Safe Schools, Healthy Students?
Approved by the SUNY Oswego School of Education; Safe Schools, Healthy
Students is a web-based workshop designed to fulfill New York State Education
Department (NYSED) requirements for teacher education candidates applying for
certification after February 1, 2004. This professional development
(non-credit) workshop is available through SUNY Oswego's Division of Continuing
Education and the SUNY Learning Network. From home or a campus computer lab,
you will be able to work conveniently at your own pace using the
ANGEL course management system.
Workshop topics include:
- Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting
- School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE)
- Fire and Arson Prevention
- Highway Safety and Traffic Regulations and School Safety Patrols
- Child Abduction Prevention
- Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Abuse
Successful completion of this course will allow you to take the competency
exam, which is offered on a regularly scheduled basis. A passing score is
required for SUNY Oswego to confirm on your transcript to the New York State
Department of Education that you have completed the appropriate training. Safe
Schools, Healthy Students will be offered at least six times per calendar
year.

Who needs to take Safe Schools,
Healthy Students?
Teachers who will be applying for certification after February 1, 2004 are
required to meet these training requirements. Oswego State students must
complete these workshops and pass the competency exam before they begin student
teaching. Workshop Completion and the Competency Exam is required, this exam
requires you to appear in person with a photo ID. Once registered, students
will be able (and required) to log on to the Angel course management system at
least once per week and complete assignments. Back to Top
How much time is involved?
This course will be seven weeks long and will require
approximately three hours of time per week. The competency exam will be held in
a campus location on a Saturday morning following each session. Exact dates,
time, and location will be announced through your course. Back to Top
Why do I have these additional
requirements?
Similar to the fingerprinting now mandatory for all school
employees, these workshops are required by the NYSED. They introduce the
student to the ongoing professional development that will also be regularly
required of teachers certified in New York State after February 1,

Is there another way of gaining the
required training?
The answer is yes, but will require that you seek out
alternatives that meet the state guidelines. In addition, you are required to
present that documentation to the School of Education Field Placement
Coordinator prior to student teaching, to the SUNY Oswego State Registrar prior
to graduation and to the New York State Education Department when you graduate.

Do I need to purchase books?
No, the mini-lectures and other course materials will be
available on the web. A DVD that you will need to access to complete your
assignments will be distributed after you register for the

Do I need any special computer
system?
The computers in the labs at SUNY Oswego will easily handle your
access to the ANGEL course management system. If you are working from home, you
will need a computer with a DVD drive (or DVD player), an Internet Service
Provider (ISP), and a web browser. If you are using a dial-up service, a 58.8
modem is recommended. No additional software is required. Back to Top
How do I obtain my workshop
certificates?
Workshop completions will be documented on your transcript. You
will also receive certificates for SAVE, Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting,
and for completion of all other workshop topics. Back to Top
Application and
Registration
You may register with your MyOswego account the way you would register for
any credit bearing class. You must visit the Continuing Education office to
receive your course materials. Matriculated SUNY Oswego students must
register online, paper registration is not available.
Non-SUNY Oswego students may register by downloading the 2008
Safe Schools, Healthy Schools form (84k) in PDF. You will need Adobe©

A materials packet containing information about accessing the
ANGEL course management system must be picked up prior to the start
of the course. You will also participate in an on-line orientation session to
learn how the virtual classroom will work. Student access begins five days
before a session starts.

Other SUNY - $200.00
Non-SUNY - $260.00
Students will be billed by the Student Accounts Office. Financial Aid will
be applied to your Safe Schools, Healthy Students bill provided that you have
registered early.
