NOTE! Being accepted into the Broadcasting and Mass Communication major at SUNY Oswego is NOT the same as being accepted into the online program. You must apply separately to the online program and have met the requirements, i.e., an Associates Degree or similar. Unless you are officially notified by the Department of Communication Studies that you have been accepted into the online program, it is assumed you intend to come to Oswego to study as a resident student. Below are some frequently asked questions about the online program in Broadcasting and Mass Communication at SUNY Oswego:
What qualifications do I need to enroll? This program is open to individuals with earned Associate degrees in Broadcasting, Radio/TV, Mass Communications, Media Studies, or similar programs at accredited colleges or universities. It is presumed that most if not all lower division courses required of all students majoring in Broadcasting and Mass Communication at SUNY Oswego have been completed successfully while earning the Associate degree. If so, it is possible that all upper division courses required in the major can be taken from broadcasting faculty completely online. In addition, all electives and other required courses outside the major can be taken online, either from SUNY Oswego, or one or more other SUNY campuses through the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) http://sln.suny.edu
What is a typical student profile? Here is a typical (and hypothetical) example of how the program works. Susan Smith completed her Associates degree in Radio-Television Broadcasting from a nearby community college several years ago. She then began working professionally as a producer at a local television station. Now she has decided to continue her education by seeking the B.A. degree in Broadcasting and Mass Communication from SUNY Oswego. However, her professional and personal commitments make it impossible for her to come to campus to take conventional, classroom-based courses. Instead, she will complete all necessary coursework over the Internet. It happens that SUNY Oswego has an articulation agreement with her community college, so that Susan's degree meets requirements for all General Education courses at Oswego. In fact, 62 hours of the 122 credit hours required to graduate can be transferred into the online program immediately from her Associates degree program. For the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree she will need to complete a total of 60 additional credit hours, or twenty courses. Of those, twelve courses are in the major with the remaining eight to be selected from upper division electives offered by Oswego or any other four-year SUNY college or university.* *A minimum of 30 credit hours must be taken from SUNY Oswego to earn a SUNY Oswego degree.
What if I do not have an associates degree? It is possible to take advantage of this program without an Associates degree, but you will need to first complete certain classroom and lab-based coursework at the Oswego campus or another accredited college or university offering appropriate courses/facilities. Please keep in mind the SUNY Oswego online program is designed to meet the needs of students who have already completed their lower division requirements in programs that are probably quite similar to the Oswego Broadcasting and Mass Communication major.
What if I already have some upper division credit from SUNY Oswego, another college, or university?Up to 62 hours of lower division credit may be transferred to Oswego from a two-year college. Up to 80 hours of lower division credit and 10 hours of upper division credit may be transferred to Oswego from an accredited four-year college or university. Of course, it is also possible to transfer more upper-division credit and less lower division credit from an accredited four-year college or university, as long as the maximum number of hours requested for transfer does not exceed 92. Note: it is possible that some pre-earned credit may not be allowed for lack of comparable courses in the Oswego catalog, or for other reasons. For example, a maximum of 48 credit hours in the broadcasting major is allowable; i.e., if the total of broadcasting and other communications credit hours - Oswego credit and transfer credit combined - goes beyond that level, additional credit in the major will be disallowed, serving no purpose in terms of meeting graduation requirements.
How long does the program normally take to complete? With careful planning, this course of study can be completed in two years of full-time study. Please note that financial aid programs usually require full-time enrollment (12 hour minimum per semester). Courses may be taken on a part-time basis, of course, so the amount of time to completion often varies from individual to individual.
Must all courses be completed online? No. SUNY Oswego offers online courses as a convenience to students who are unable to come to campus, but students often mix and match online courses with conventional courses. There are no distinctions drawn between online courses or traditional classroom courses. Some students may wish to take some courses at the Oswego campus - or at other campuses where appropriate courses are offered.
