CLEP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How difficult is the test?
We do not have that information. If you have questions about your ability
to pass the CLEP exam, discuss your readiness with your advisor.
How are the test scored?
CLEP exams are scored on a 20-80-point scale. For most tests the credit
granting score recommended by the American Council on Education is 50 but there
are exceptions, for some tests and at some colleges. If you have questions
contact your advisor.
What if I have a disability?
Contact Disability Services at 315.312.3358 for accommodations.
How can I study or prepare myself for the CLEP exam?
CLEP pupils and sells an official study guides. Information for ordering
is in the registration booklet. Other CLEP exam preparation materials are sold
in larger bookstores.
How long is the test?
The time the exam questions are in front of you is 90 minutes, but the
whole process usually takes about 2 1/2 hours on test day.
Will I find out if I passed immediately?
For most exams you will receive a score report the day of the exam. Exams
with essays are only graded once monthly so you will not get the score report
on test day.
What if I start an exam and find it is so difficult I cannot pass?
You have the option of quitting an exam without reporting the scores. Ask
the test administrator about that on test day.
Will there be breaks or rest period?
Unless you are a person receiving accommodations for a specific
disability, no rest period is allowed.
The CLEP application says I may use a credit card, why must I send you a
check for $20.00 to register?
CLEP allows local test centers to charge a test administration fee. The
Continuing Education Division at Oswego State administers the CLEP exams and
accepts in person cash or checks for payment. You may use a credit card for the
$70.00 paid to Educational Testing Services on test day.
If I don't score high enough, may I retake the test next month?
CLEP requires that a test taker wait six months to retake an exam.
Exceptions to this rule can only be approved by the test administrator in
extreme situations.
