College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

A registration booklet with basic CLEP information including the Registration-Admission Form, is available at Continuing Education, 166 Campus Center. The approximate cost for CLEP tests is $90.00 per exam. Please register early for the desired test date as seats are limited.

Both general examinations for elective credit, and subject examinations for specific course equivalents, suitable for General Education, are offered. For additional test information visit the official College Board CLEP website.

Continuing Education official CLEP testing center, No. 2543, is located at it's Oswego State Education Center in Phoenix, New York.

The registration booklet provides the basic CLEP information you need; the Registration-Admission Form, and how to order the Official Study Guide. Complete all applicable parts of the Registration form, according to the instructions and send with appropriate payment to the above address. At the time the registration is submitted, two separate payments per test must be made as follows:

  1. One $70.00 check or money order payable to College Level Examination Program
Credit Cards may be used on the test date for this fee only. (No cash, please)
  2. One $20.00 check or money order payable to Oswego CLEP. (No cash or credit cards please)

The Registration-Admission form and payments should be submitted at least two (2) weeks prior to the desired test date. When you return the form, be sure to include a second choice of a testing date in case you cannot be accommodated at the date and time of your first choice.

Examinations are normally scheduled on:

  • Saturdays: beginning at 9:00 am
  • Wednesday Evenings: beginning at 6 pm

If you are matriculated at Oswego State and intend to have the score sent to Oswego, you must file an OFF-CAMPUS STUDY APPROVAL FORM, prior to taking the CLEP examination, to ensure that you will receive credit as expected. It is your responsibility to register for and take the correct exam. For additional information, call the Testing Center at 315.312.2270.

CLEP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will I find out if I passed immediately?
For most exams you will receive a score report the day of the exam. Exams with essays are only graded once monthly so you will not get the score report on test day.

You have the option of quitting an exam without reporting the scores. Ask the test administrator about that on test day.

Will there be breaks or rest period?
Unless you are a person receiving accommodations for a specific disability, no rest period is allowed.

The CLEP application says I may use a credit card, why must I send you a check for $20.00 to register?
CLEP allows local test centers to charge a test administration fee. The Continuing Education Division at Oswego State administers the CLEP exams and accepts in person cash or checks for payment. You may use a credit card for the $70.00 paid to Educational Testing Services on test day.

If I don't score high enough, may I retake the test next month?
CLEP requires that a test taker wait six months to retake an exam. Exceptions to this rule can only be approved by the test administrator in extreme situations.
