Major Information
The Master of Science in Education degree, major in Career and Technical Education
program is designed with flexibility to permit each student to pursue and
individualized career concentration in Vocational Education. The graduate
program offers opportunities for teachers to earn professional New York State
teacher certification in serveral occupational subject areas.

Major InformationThe Master of Science in Education degree, majors in Agricultural Education (7-12), Business and Marketing Education (7-12), Family and Consumer Sciences Education (7-12), Health Careers Education (7-12), Technical Education (7-12), and Trade Education (7-12) is designed for specialists in the respective field that wish to gain initial and professional certification to teach their specialty in New York State. The Master of Science in Education degree, majors in Agricultural Education (all grades), Business and Marketing Education (all grades), is designed for generalists in the respective field that wish to gain initial and professional certification to teach their subject area in New York State.
Master of Science in Education, Major in Vocational-Technical Education
Major Information
The Master of Science in Education degree, major in Vocational Teacher Preparation
program is designed with flexibility to permit each student to pursue an individualized
career concentration in Vocational Education. The graduate program offers
opportunities for teachers to earn permanent New York State teacher certification
in several occupational subject areas. The graduate program also offers teachers
an opportunity to prepare for other staff responsibilities. Among the various
career objectivesa graduate student may choose are positions as proprietary
school instructor, two-year college vocational technical administrator, curriculum
coordinator, work-based learning coordinator industrial training coordinator,
vocational guidance and placement coordinator, and other related professional
occupations.
Admission (all majors)
Students with a baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the following
areas may apply for graduate study in Vocational Teacher Preparation:
Agriculture, Business or Marketing, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health
Careers, Technical Subjects, Trade Subjects, or Technology Education.
A student with a baccalaureate degree with a major in a non-related area
and appropriate work experience in a related area is eligible to apply
for graduate study in Vocational Teacher Preparation.
Prospective students must submit to the Office of Graduate Studies:
1. A baccalaureate degree transcript from an accredited four-year college
or university
2. Three letters of reference attesting to applicantÕs commitment and
potential
3. A written career goal statement and philosophy statement on the form
provided by the Graduate Office.

5. Occupational Assessment forms if necessary. Students without 36 sh
of occupational credit must verify 4 years of work experience and complete
the Occupational Competency Exam (OCE)
Applicants who do not qualify for full admission status may be recommended
for conditional admission status. Students admitted with conditional admission
status will be permitted to complete three courses (9 semester hours)
prior to a final admission review by the department and Graduate Office.
Degree Candidacy (All Majors)
It is the responsibility of the student to file for degree candidacy upon
completion of 12 semester hours or during the term in which 18 semester
hours will be completed. Hours over 18 are subject to forfeiture. A cumulative
average of 3.0 or better is required to qualify for the awarding of degree
candidacy status. This candidacy application form is available at the
Graduate Studies Office and the completed form should be filed in the
Graduate Office.
Additional Requirements (All Students)
Prior to the conferring of the Master's Degree, students must have successfully
completed the departmental comprehensive examination which they are eligible
to take upon completion of 21 semester hours of programmatic coursework.
In addition, students in Vtp 598 must submit a completed copy of their
applied research paper to the departmental office prior to graduation.
Initial Certification Students
Students pursuing initial certification as teachers of career and technical
subjects must verify appropriate work experience by completing the Occupational
Competency Assessment Program requirements. NYSED requirements for certification
may be in addition to program requirements. Consult the NYSED web page
