of Science in Education: Literacy Birth - Grade 6 and Literacy Grades 5

Admission
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
and be eligible for a NYS Provisional or Initial Certificate as a teacher
in either Childhood 1-6 or Adolescence 7-12. The following materials must
be submitted to the Graduate Office, 602 Culkin Hall:
1. Completed application form.
2. An official transcript for all undergraduate and graduate work.
3. Two letters of recommendation: one from a college Professor and a second
from the student teaching experience who can speak to your teaching ability.
4. Minimum overall grade index of 2.70. If the index is 2.69 or below, the
score from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), (General Aptitude) or Miller's
Analogy Test (MAT) must be submitted with the application materials. To be
considered, an applicant must score in the 50th percentile or better.
5. Attendance at a Program Information Meeting. There are two meetings scheduled
prior to th deadline for completing the program planning. To schedule a time

6. Completion of all NYS certification exams.
Application materials are due by March 1 for summer and fall admission and
October 1 for spring admission. All applicants will be reviewed at one time
following the admission deadlines. Completed applications received after
the closing dates will be reviewed in the next application period.
Degree Candidacy
Students accepted to one of the MSED-Literacy programs must apply for Degree
Candidacy after completing 12 to 18 cr of their program; any course work taken
in excess of 18 cr is liable to forfeiture. A GPA of 3.0 or better is required
to qualify for degree candidacy status. Submit the completed candidacy application
to the Graduate Office; the application and a current transcript is forwarded
to the advisor. Students will then receive a letter advising them of their
status.
Curriculum
The MSED-Literacy programs are 33 cr programs which include a minimum of 24
cr of Literacy courses and 3 cr of professional coursework. One 3 cr course
is an elective which may be selected from any graduate department at the College
(with advisor approval). The final 3 cr will be either an elective or Lit
597/ Lit 598. Near the end of the program students decide whether to complete
a Project/Thesis or write a culminating examination. Students opting for the
culminating exam take another elective; students opting to do a Thesis/Project
take Lit 597/ Lit 598. The Thesis/Project option requires advisor approval.
