Urban Field Opportunities

The faculty of the School of Education (SOE) at Oswego State believes that the role of schools is to promote authentic learning by all students.  Therefore, field experiences in real school settings are woven throughout each candidate’s educational program to promote meaningful opportunities and appropriate support for all students to engage in self-directed inquiry, problem-solving, critical thinking, and reflection in real world and creative contexts.  Many field experience opportunities are offered in urban settings, ensuring all candidates meet NYS certification regulations and Oswego State’s SOE program goals.

Schools in the Syracuse City School District offer many opportunities for field experience for pre-service teachers in urban classrooms throughout the district.  Oswego State offers EDU 381/581 Schools and Urban Society/Culturally Relevant Teaching during intercession in New York City and during the summer in SyracuseSummer in the City is a program sponsored by the New York City Education Department.  Candidates can also request to student teach in an urban setting in New York City, Rochester or Syracuse schools.
