Project SMART participants develop and disseminate "Kids At Work" projects that emphasize the applications of school science and math in the community.

The effectiveness of the program has been validated by the New York State Education Department's "Sharing Success" program.  The accomplishments of our professional development process have resulted in an unmatched reputation for success in improving K-8 elementary science, mathematics and technology instruction in Central New York.

  • Professional development for more than 55 Arts & Science and Education faculty on teaching for inquiry, K-12 standards, MST content and pedagogy, and equity

  • Revised A&S General Education courses (at least 4 science and 3 math) to be more inquiry oriented, to include more laboratory experiences, and to be more directly linked to K-12 Learning Standards

  • Enhanced A&S and School of Education relations

  • Revised teacher education courses (especially math and science methods, general methods, and student teaching) to be more closely linked to k-12 core curriculum learning standards

  • Opportunities for IHE faculty, teachers, and business and industry representatives to collaborate and improve K-12 learning experiences connected to the workplace

  • Enhanced partnerships with the community

  • Enabled us to secure NSF funding for the Project SMART validation study, and local funding from business and industry

  • Enabled SUNY Oswego to obtain NSF funding for a campus-wide “systemic reform initiative” leading to the development of interdisciplinary, inquiry based A& S courses

  • Provided support to develop our urban initiative including: visits to urban sites, establishment of partnerships with schools in NYC and Syracuse, more than 90 Summer in the City participants, more than 30 Schools and Urban Society (2-week emersion courses) participants, and more than 50 student teaching placements in the past three years

  • Support for approximately 3-5 new faculty each year to engage in collaborative research, travel to NYC, and work with graduate students

  •  Provided a pool of highly qualified local teachers to work as adjuncts in our teacher preparation program

  • Increased emphasis on equity issues throughout our Elementary and Secondary Education programs via GESA, Data Strategies, and Poverty Workshop training

  • Support for faculty work in local PDS initiatives

  • Implement our Kids at Work curriculum units (Sharing Success validated project) which encourages local business and industry to support education

Impact on Pre-Service Teachers

  • Support for approximately 300 pre-teachers each semester providing learning opportunities through Project SMART workshops and an MST curriculum materials resource center

  • Opportunities to participate in our one week summer institute (earning experience, graduate credit when appropriate, and chances to work with real teachers)

  • Virtual learning experiences each semester via two-way interactive video-conferencing with Project SMART elementary teachers in Elementary Science Methods courses

  • Opportunities for undergrads in work-study experiences in the Project SMART lab

  • Enhanced field placement opportunities each semester when pre-teachers are placed with more than 25 Project SMART teachers in local schools, and in Syracuse and NYC schools

Impact on In-Service Teachers

  • Opportunity to participate in a year long site-based professional development each year for 25-70 participants (over 250 teachers have participated in this institute, some for as many as 13 years, many for 3-5 years)

  • Development of a regional Professional Development network of teacher leaders who regular participate in local, regional, state, and national professional development conferences and programs

  • Hundreds of workshops on inquiry learning, GESA, Framework for Understanding Poverty, Data Strategies, and Kids at Work unit development for thousands of regional teachers

  • Support for teacher study groups on GESA, Data Strategies, and effective teaching in Oswego County’s PDSs

  • Support for teacher action research directed at improving student achievement

  • Involvement of teachers for planning for education change at the district, local, and state levels

Impact on Parents

  • Increased awareness of and support for school MST programs and their application to local business and industry (Project SMART validation study)

  • Opportunity to support parents attending field trips to local business and industry sites

  • Increased parent involvement in local schools via IMPACT Math programs

Impact on Administrators

  • Support of administrator collaboration with higher education and business and industry via Project SMART steering committee, Project SMART supported field trips, and Project SMART Administrative Team, and participation in Project SMART Summer Institute activities
