Built in 1968, Charlotte Waterman Theatre is located in Tyler Hall and consists of a proscenium stage with continental style seating for 525.
A hydraulic orchestra pit lift provides a curved forestage extending 14' from curtain line at stage center.
Stage deck is 2'- 6" above first row floor.
A fully-equipped scene shop connects to the stage through dual 16' high x 24' wide motorized doors upstage right. Depending on schedule, a portion of the shop area may be available for scenery storage; contact Technical Director for details.
A crossover hallway behind the stage is accessible via doors upstage left and right.
All uses of Waterman Theatre must be scheduled with the Department of Theatre and require the completion of proper reservation forms.
Theatre Department technicians must be engaged to operate house equipment and provide supervision at all times when the facility is in use.
A detailed estimate for labor will be provided upon completion of theatre reservation forms. Department staff will cooperate fully and endeavor to keep labor costs to a minimum while operating within facility guidelines. Current hourly rates are $11.50 for student technicians and $23.00 for faculty/staff. Rates are higher outside the normal academic year. Student labor will be utilized whenever possible, but may not be available or appropriate in all situations. Fully trapped 36' x 30' area, consisting of 60 - 3' x 6' traps. Each trap is framed with 2"x4" fir on 8" centers with 3/4" plywood covered with 3/4" pine and 1/4" tempered Masonite.
Existing floor surface is rough and may be painted for the current Theatre Department production (contact Technical Director for current status).
A 40' wide by 30' deep Gerriets dance floor (black one side, gray other) is available for rental from the Theatre Department; contact Technical Director for details.
ORCHESTRA PIT LIFT
Accommodates approximately 20 musicians. Operated from stage manager's console or pit with 5 preset stopping positions:
- Level 5: 1'-0" above stage level
- Level 4: at stage level
- Level 3: 2'-6" below stage level
- Level 2: 5'-0" below stage level
- Level 1: 8'-0" below stage level (pit entrance level)
Pit takes approximately 90 seconds to travel down from stage level to lowest level, and 60 seconds to travel up.
T-bar counterweight system by JR Clancy with locking rail located at stage level SR.
57 lines total on approximate 6" centers (please refer to fly schedule for details). All battens are 50'-0" long, 1-1/4" id pipe, truss battens with four lines per set on 13'-0" centers.
Pipes can be extended to a maximum of 56'-0".
Counterweight sizes are 12.5 lbs and 25 lbs.
The gridiron is accessible via ladders upstage right and downstage left as well as building stairwells. A single counterweight loading gallery is situated 5' below grid level SR.
Guillotine style act curtain, manually operated from stage floor SR. Note: two stagehands will be needed to operate fast cues with the act curtain.

An electric winch - driven truss batten located upstage is used for lighting equipment storage.
Soft goods include black velour masking and travelers (see list). Please consult Technical Director for current location and availability of all soft goods. Theatre Department technicians must be engaged to operate all stage rigging equipment.

A curved front-of-house ceiling cove is located approximately 20' from the plaster line at center and 24' above stage level.
Additional front - of - house positions include side alcoves (Box Booms) and back of house rails.
Lighting is controlled from an elevated booth in the center of the back wall.
House lights may be dimmed from the light booth manual console or via DMX from the lighting console. House and stage work lights may be switched on/off from the stage manager's console SR.
There are 4 - 20amp non-dims that may be controlled from either the stage manager's console or the manual console in the light booth.
Lighting control consists of an ETC Emphasis System. It is a 2D WYSIWYG Perform package linked to an ETC Express 125. In addition, a LMI CH200-24 may be available. The standard house dimmers consist of 36 Kliegl R66/81 7KW dimmers.
Additional dimmers consisting of 2 - LMI 2.4K L86 12 packs, 1 - 2.4K ETC Sensor 12 pack, and 2 - LMI 2.4K six packs may be available depending on schedule.

All permanent lighting circuits are 20 amp grounded twist-lock, old style (ground indexing pin out). Some adapters to other systems are available. Circuit Chart(gif 16k). A PDF (Adobe Acrobat)(.pdf 5k) version of the Circuit Chart is available.
There are 4 - 6 circuit multi connectors upstage on the grid (2 on each side), 4 -125' multi cables, and 4 - 3' breakouts to 20 amp grounded twist-lock old style (indexing pin out).
Departmental productions in other theatres may limit the availability of lighting control, dimmers and instrumentation. In this case, the sponsoring organization will be responsible for renting any additional equipment required for their production. Please consult with the Technical Coodinator to determine availability of lighting equipment for your show.
The Patch Panel, located at the first gallery level SL, is a Kliegl Safe Patch with 4 - 20 amp circuits per dimmer, In addition, dimmers 25 - 36 have a 50 amp circuit available. Circuits 213 - 220 are 50 amp circuits. An additional patch panel provides 2 - 20 amp circuits per dimmer for all above listed portable dimmer packs.
The dimmer rack is located above the Men's Quick Change room offstage left.
A 200-amp - 3 phase company switch (which is used to supply all additional loads above the house dimmers) is located at stage level up left.
A "designer's table" can be set up house center with telephone, headset, an iMac with Lightwrite and/or MacLux Pro,10T Ethernet and video display of the lighting console screen.
Theatre Department technicians must be engaged to operate all lighting equipment.
The main Waterman sound console is a 32 in, 8 out Mackie 8 bus. The system is supported by 2 cassette recorders, 4 CD players, 2 DAT machines, 2 - 2 track Mini-Disc recorder/players, 1 - 4 track MiniDisk recorder/player, multiple CD-R Recorders, a Pro Tools 5.1 editing/recording system and a few RE15 and 635A microphones. There is no reel-to-reel capability within the theatre sound system, however a 2 track reel-to-reel Otari 50 - 50 may be available for rental from the Music Department.
There are 18 microphone lines to the stage of which 4 are on the grid.
Six Electrovoice Sentry II Speakers are located on the back and side walls of the auditorium and 5-Integrated Sound System SRS85L speakers are mounted above and across the proscenium.
There are 6 outlets for onstage speakers, and 2 Electrovoice Eliminator speakers available. An EAW SB850P SubWoofer is available for use on stage. Power amplifiers for all speakers consist of 8 Crest FA1201 amps.
Additional equipment may be available.
A Clear-Com 4 channel system is available with headset stations located in most areas, microphone stations at the Box Office and House Manager's positions, and operates through a SB412A power supply located at the Stage Manager's console SR.
STAGE MONITOR SYSTEM
All backstage areas are equipped with an audio system so that cast and crew may listen to the show in progress. A "page" feature located at the stage manager's position down right allows announcements to be made over these speakers. A video monitor system displays a view of the stage on color monitors located in the quick change rooms, dressing rooms, green room, costume shop and backstage hallway. Additional video monitoring, including an IR camera, is available.
