Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

How do students register for SLN courses?
Just like any other course, students register through the Registrar's Office of the campus offering the course. If it is an Oswego Course, they must register through the Oswego Registrar's Office, using the same process and calendar as with any course. This pertains to the payment for the course as well.

What is the cost of an SLN Course?
The tuition and fees are the same for an Oswego SLN course as they are for any Oswego credit-bearing course. The difference in fees is based on whether it is a graduate or undergraduate course, but this is not an SLN difference.

How do students access the SLN course?
They must first register for the course through the college offering the course. Then they go on the Internet (through Internet Explorer or FireFox) and proceed to the SLN website (https://oswego.sln.suny.edu/frames.aspx) and sign in using your Oswego email address and and a temporary password of "slnangel". You will be prompted to change your password once you log in. If you are new to Oswego and need an email account, following the link to request one.

When do courses start?
All of Oswego's SLN courses officially begin the first day of the semester (example: August 30th for the Fall 2007 semester). In addition, most of our online courses are accessible one week prior to the official start date of the semester. This allows students the opportunity to get into the virtual course and learn how to navigate their way around the web and the course so that they are more confident once the course actually starts.

Why is Oswego putting courses on the web?
Numerous students have found that work or family/community obligations prevent them from attending a course at the same time each week or from commuting to Oswego. This is a way to increase student access to our courses; it is also an opportunity to teach courses with methodologies that can increase student learning.

Do I have to be online at a specific time?
No. SLN courses are asynchronous. That means you can log onto the web any time that is convenient for you -- morning, noon or night. However, instructors may tell students that they are expected to log on a certain number of times per week (example 3 times/week) and that they need to participate each time they log on (e.g., submit an assignment or participate in the discussion). Each credit-bearing course runs 15 weeks in the fall or spring, and 12 weeks in the summer. EVERYTHING is done online; there are NO face-to-face meetings.

Am I really part of the class?
Yes. All faculty design the learning experience in a way that challenges you to do your best as an individual; many courses have group activities that build a very strong learning community.

How do I get my textbooks if I am from out of the area?

Our College Store carries the texts and other supplies required by the professor. If you cannot come to the store, they will ship the materials to you for a small fee.

For more information, contact dbuske1@oswego.edu or visit the online Oswego State campus store.

How do I know if the course will transfer to my college? The best thing to do whether you are ransferring a course to Oswego or from Oswego, is to work with an advisor from the college or university that you intend to graduate from in order to determine if the course meets the requirements for your degree program.

Where do I get the course description? The easiest way to find Oswego course descriptions is to go to the following website: http://myoswego.oswego.edu
Then click on the link for course descriptions.

You can also find course descriptions through the SLN website (http://SLN.SUNY.EDU) by going into the Prospective Student link and then going to the Questions Link and selecting the course list for the semester you are interested in (usually only the current semester and the previous semester are at this site, though other links do exist). You will then need to search by campus.

Who do I call for more information?
Contact Continuing Education for more details on Distance Learning or about SLN. Phone 315-312-2270 or email ced@oswego.edu.

Who do I contact for assistance with using the SLN site:
SLN Help Desk:  Helpdesk@SLN.suny.edu  or call 1.800.875.6269 and press 2.
Oswego State:  ced@oswego.edu  or call 315.312.2270

The two step process for accessing SLN courses:
1- Register for the course with Oswego State (or the college offering the course).
2- Log onto the SLN website one week before classes begin to test your computer, participate in the student orientation, and begin to learn your way around in the virtual classroom. You can do that by going to the SLN website: https://oswego.sln.suny.edu/frames.aspx

Once you have an active password, the "Student Commons" link is where you may access your course and the orientation to SLN courses. It is highly recommended that new students complete the orientation prior to entering the course.
