B. Electives21 cr
  • To be selected under advisement from a list of courses approved by the core faculty from participating departments (Anthropology, Sociology, Chemistry, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Public Justice). The sequence of courses will be individually tailored by the advisor in relation to each student's career orientation. At least fifteen hours of major electives must be taken at the 300-level or above

Pbj 301, 397, and 401 must be taken at Oswego.
Additionally, the following restrictions apply to the Public Justice major program:
1. Public Justice majors may transfer to SUNY Oswego a maximum of six (6) upper division elective hours in the major from an accredited four-year or upper division college.
2. Internal Transfer Policy: To declare a Public Justice major a student already enrolled at Oswego must have completed at least 30 semester hours with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
3. To complete the Public Justice major a student must receive a grade of C- or better in each Public Justice core course.
4. To complete the Public Justice major a student must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in the core courses.
5. To complete the Public Justice major a student must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in the elective courses.
6. Successful completion of all previous Public Justice core courses is a prerequisite for admission to each successive core course in the required sequence.
7. Admission to core courses after Pbj 201 requires prior departmental approval.

Other electives will be added from time to time. Check with the Undergraduate Advisement & Advance Registration Bulletin for the semester you are registering for. Additionally, the following restrictions apply to the Public Justice major program:

  • Public Justice majors may transfer to SUNY Oswego [directly into the PBJ major] a maximum of six (6) upper division elective hours in the major from an accredited four-year or upper division college.
  • Public Justice majors may transfer to SUNY Oswego [directly into the PBJ major] a maximum of six (6) lower division elective hours in the major from an accredited two- or four-year college.
  • To declare a Public Justice major, a student must have completed at least 30 semester hours with a minimum cumulative grade point average determined by the annual demand for admission to the major. Students must have a cumulative average of at least 2.0 to apply.
  • To complete the major, the student must earn a grade of C- or better in each Public Justice core course and must maintain a minimum 2.0 average in all Public Justice major electives. This minimum 2.0 average will not be waived under any circumstances.
  • Students must complete all previous Public Justice courses with a grade of C- or better in order to be admitted to each successive core course in the required sequence.
  • Admission to Public Justice core courses after PBJ 201 requires prior departmental approval.
  • Repeated "D" or "E" Policy: Any student who receives a "D" or "E" grade in a Public Justice core course must repeat that course before continuing on in the required core sequence. Any student repeating a core course in which he or she received a grade of "D" or "E", and who receives a second "D" or "E" in the same course, may not repeat that course again without prior Public Justice Department approval according to the procedure outlined below:

Procedure:

  • The student submits a petition for approval to repeat the core course to the Public Justice Department Chairperson.
  • The Chairperson will appoint a committee of three Public Justice core faculty to consider the student's petition and decide whether to permit the student to repeat the core course for a third time.
  • The student may be consulted as to his or her choice of faculty to serve on the committee.
  • The committee's decision in the matter is considered final.

Any Public Justice core course that must be repeated must be taken at SUNY-Oswego.
