Research Interests: My research interests are in the area of psycholinguistics. Specifically, I am interested in the social and contextual factors that affect how people use and understand language, an area called pragmatics. My recent projects have examined why people use ostensible speech (e.g., "We should get together sometime" when both speaker and listener know this will not happen), how people understand irony and sarcasm, and how men and women differ in their use of figurative language (e.g., metaphor). Other interests involve applying this pragmatic knowledge to human-computer interaction.
