Honors Program in Psychology

To meet the needs of its highly motivated and talented students, the Psychology Department offers an honors program which combines a sequence of courses with an independent research project. Beginning with their Junior year, the students take a two course sequence (Psy 390H and Psy 391H) which has been designed to provide a broad "state of the art" background in psychology and to guide the students in the selection and development of their independent projects. During the Senior year the students conduct their own research in the Practicum in Honors Research (Psy 490H) under the supervision of an appropriate faculty member. The final course, History and Current Systems in Psychology (Psy 475H), provides an integrative experience at the end of the honors program. These courses are taken in addition to the psychology major core curriculum and combine with the elective requirements such that 36 hours in psychology are required to graduate with a B.A., Honors.
The following procedures have been established:
1. Criteria for admission and continuation in the program are positive recommendations of faculty in the Psychology Department, 3.5 GPA in psychology, and 3.3 GPA overall.
2. Students should apply for admission to the Honors Program in February of their Sophomore year; late admissions into the program are possible under certain circumstances (e.g., transfer students). For further information and program application forms, interested students should contact the Chair of the Department of Psychology.
