A student wishing to become a doctor or dentist can major in any subject she or he chooses since there is no such thing as a pre-med major, as there is an English major or a Chemistry major. Some pre-medical students major in one or more of the traditional physical sciences. However, in the beginning of the 21st century, medical schools are looking for applicants who are well-rounded, thus students majoring in Psychology, Philosophy, Literature, etc. are also pre-med majors. All students interested in pre-medical and medical education take the series of courses the Association of American Medical Colleges has recommended.
SUNY Oswego has a Pre-Medical Advisory Committee (consult College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s office for more information) to assist pre-medical and predental students with their questions, SUNY Oswego's own procedures for letters of reference, and med school application procedures.
Members of the Pre-medical Advisory Committee (PMAC):
Kestas Bendinskas, Chemistry Brooks Gump, Psychology James MacKenzie, Biological Sciences Peter A.Rosenbaum, Biological Sciences Elizabeth Bridges, Admissions Bob Casper, Career Services Mary Frances Stuck, Assistant Dean - Arts & Sciences
