Philosophy gave birth to all the sciences and, although they have gone their separate ways, all sciences still retain a relation, greater or less, to philosophy. The relations between philosophy and psychology, however, remain especially intimate. Our philosophical picture of human experience, and what it may be, can be advanced by our psychological understanding of what it actually is; equally, our psychological understanding can be illuminated by careful philosophical analysis. The program of the joint major is dedicated to the idea that work at the interface of these two disciplines is of fundamental importance.
