Admission

Admission to the English MA program is granted by the Graduate Dean.  Applicants for the English MA should fill out the “Application for Admission to Graduate Study” form available from the Graduate Dean’s office.  Students should also consult the annual Graduate Studies Catalog for general policies and regulations regarding all graduate studies.  Applicants should submit two references (from undergraduate teachers or from people who can make professional judgments about an applicant’s work), and a transcript.  The student intending to work for an MA in English must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.  Undergraduate work in English is assumed, usually at the level of 24 to 36 credits (eight to twelve 3-credit courses).  To be considered for recommendation by the graduate English admissions committee the applicant must have earned at least a B average in an undergraduate English major or its equivalent, or have had an undergraduate in English or its equivalent and have completed four course with at least a B at the MA Level in English at Oswego.

An applicant who does not satisfy the above requirements may with the approval of the English graduate director and the graduate dean apply for provisional candidacy.  Provisional candidates shall be required to successfully complete a prescribed number of undergraduate and/or graduate courses approved by the Graduate Director and the Dean.
