Broadcasting and Mass Communication

The field of mass communication is vibrant with change and innovation. New technologies and programming strategies make this an exciting area of study. The Broadcasting and Mass Communication program is designed to provide students with an understanding of the evolving mass media industries including radio, television, cable, film, the Internet and multimedia. Oswego provides students with the opportunity to study media in a traditional campus setting or online via the World Wide Web.

Students study a core of courses related to the design and production of media, the interrelated nature of the media industries and the skills necessary to write, produce and distribute media messages. Students may explore a variety of areas including audio and video production, broadcast journalism, copywriting and media management. Department facilities include analog and digital television studios, multimedia laboratories, radio studios and multitrack recording facilities.

Broadcasting and Mass Communication majors are encouraged to develop skills necessary to succeed in the media field through extra-curricular participation in campus media and internships. The College has a rich media landscape including two FM radio stations, a student-operated campus cable television station, the Oswegonian and Oswego Online. Oswego offers internship all across America and in England. Students are encouraged to participate in one or more internships during their college careers.
