The Department of Chemistry offers several programs leading to Bachelor of
Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees,
minors in chemistry and
forensic science, and certification for Secondary Education majors. These
programs are designed to meet a variety of needs.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry satisfies the American Chemical
Society certification requirements and is appropriate for students who plan
careers as professional chemists. Within the B.S. Chemistry degree, the
department offers a
chemistry and an
environmental concentration. A forensic science minor is available for
students planning a career in applying science to law. The department offers
courses in criminalistic chemistry and forensic science. A number of our
students are working with the F.B.I. and other forensic laboratories.
New for Fall 2005. The department will be offering a
Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. This degree is designed for
students who wish to enter the workforce as a biochemist or to attend graduate
school in Biochemistry.
The department offers a
Bachelor of Science degree in Geochemistry, jointly with the Department of
Earth Science. The objective of this program is to train individuals who will
be able to conduct and supervise a variety of projects in geochemical
applications, such as geochemical exploration, environmental management and
power plant studies. Graduates of this program are well prepared for entering
graduate school, either in geochemistry or geology, because of the emphasis
placed on laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
Lastly, the department offers a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry, which is well-suited to students who
wish to pursue a double major (such as Chemistry-Biology, Chemistry-Public
Justice, Chemistry-Computer Science) or a broad liberal education with
sufficient chemistry to continue in the field of chemistry.
