Dr. Norman J. and Elsie H. Gillette Outstanding Senior in Biology Award
Norman Gillette (d. 1996), Professor Emeritus of Biology, was a member of and significant contributor to the Biology Department at Oswego. Prior to his arrival at Oswego, he taught at the University of Idaho and Syracuse University. Norman taught challenging and popular courses in botany and genetics. As an educator herself, Dr. Gillette’s wife, Elsie, provided support to him throughout his career. This award is presented to the outstanding senior biology major at Oswego at Spring Honors Convocation. The student is nominated and selected by the Department of Biological Sciences faculty.

Martin V. Torok Memorial Award
This award was established by the Torok family in memory of their late son, Martin (d. 1975), killed by a drunken driver. Martin was an Oswego graduate student and a Vietnam War Veteran, who received the Bronze Medal for heroism. This award is given to an outstanding full-time student who has achieved junior standing and is majoring in Biology or Zoology, with preference for a student doing research in freshwater biology. Qualified students are nominated and selected by the Awards Committee of the Department of Biological Sciences. Awards are announced at the Spring Honors Convocation.

Merck-AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Fellowship
This program is made possible through a $60,000 grant awarded to Drs. Bendinskas (Chemistry) and MacKenzie (Biological Sciences). This 10-week program will occur during the summers of 2006-2008 and will include funding for four (4) students each summer. Students from the Biological Sciences and Chemistry will be selected through a competitive process that includes an on-line application followed by an interview. Students will receive a $3,000 stipend and free on-campus housing and food (provided by the Dean of Arts and Sciences) for the 10 weeks of the program.
