In the studio, the Department offers a variety of courses in ceramics, drawing, design and graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. These courses encourage self-expression and the honing of technical skills. Through discussion and critiques, students can measure their progress in both areas. Students in the BFA program can concentrate in either a studio area or in computer graphics. The Graphics area prepares graduates for positions in the visual communications industry. Each student uses a computer workstation in a hands-on setting and learns a great range of software programs. The work is printed out on high-quality, continuous tone color printers. Many students are able to participate in a work-study program their senior year, where they learn within an acutaly industry environment. Entry into the BFA programs requires a portfolio review. For information on the review process, contact the Art Department. Prospective students should direct questions to the Art Department office or consult the Department web site.
Offerings in Art History are particularly extensive for a college the size of Oswego. Students take a two semester Survey of Art and may select from upper division courses in Medieval, Renaissance, American, 19th century, 20th century, Chinese, Japanese, African, and American Indian art.
