General Program Info
The Public Accounting Master of Business Administration (MBA) has been designed to meet the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' requirements which went into effect in the year 2000. In addition, the combined five-year program has been registered with the NYS Education Department for candidates seeking admission to the Uniform CPA Examination.


Admission

Students must have a bachelor degree in accounting from an accredited college or university. Applicants to the program should have a minimum 2.6/4.0 undergraduate G.P.A. and a minimum score of 500 on the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT). Transfer students from 4-year institutions should apply in early spring of their senior year of study. Students accepted for transfer from 4-year institutions should have a bachelor's degree or the equivalent in the field of accounting as described in the New York State Public Accountancy Handbook.

Each participant must submit two letters of reference in addition to the transcripts and examination reports required. Admission procedures are delineated in the Admissions section of the Graduate catalog.

Transfer students will fulfill their foundation requirements by virtue of their undergraduate degree in accounting or the equivalent as set forth in the New York State Public Accountancy Handbook.

Note: All Foundation Core courses have to be completed before MBA 550 can be taken. Typically, this course is taken during your last semester. You must have permission of the MBA Director to register for this course.

Degree Candidacy

It is the responsibility of the student to file for degree candidacy when 12 to 18 hours of graduate study have been completed. Evidence of graduate level ability and a cumulative average of 3.0 or better are required to qualify for the awarding of degree candidacy status. Failure to apply for Degree Candidacy may result in the forfeiture of all credit hours above 18. Candidacy must be achieved to register for MBA 550. The Application for Admission to Candidacy for the Master's Program can be picked up in the MBA Office, or you may request that one be mailed to you.

Transfer Credit

Once accepted into the MBA Program, students must receive prior approval from their advisor before enrolling in off-campus study. The Approval of Transfer Credit for Coursework Taken at Accredited Institutions other than SUNY Oswego form may be picked up in either the MBA office or the Graduate Studies office. A maximum of six credit hours may be transferred into your program, provided that a grade of "B" or better is obtained in the course. A course description from the catalog of the other institution must accompany the request for the course involved. Upon course completion, an official transcript must be sent to the Graduate Office.

Additional Requirement Information
Graduates of four-year schools wishing to earn only the M.B.A. portion of the 5-year program must show evidence of the following coursework:

Accounting (including course coverage in each of the following subject areas: accounting principles, cost accounting, tax accounting and auditing) 24 cr
Commercial law 6 cr
Finance 6 cr
Business statistics 3 cr
Liberal arts and science courses 60 cr
Business and accounting electives 21 cr
Total (including at least six credit hours of economic principles which may be used to satisfy either the business electives or liberal arts requirements) 120 cr
