Sarfraz Mian is a professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship and the Chair of the Marketing & Management Department in the School of Business. Prior to SUNY Oswego, he has taught at University of Maryland and was a visiting professor at universities in Europe and South Asia. He earned his MBA and Ph.D. in business administration from George Washington University and an MS in management science from Northwestern University.

Dr. Mian served as Chair for INFORMS Technology Management (2002-04) and an officer of the Academy of Management TIM Division (2000-05). He is the co-founder and US Coordinator of North American Innovation Research Network (NAIRNet) and is the Head (PI) of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Pakistan.

His scholarly work comprises of more than 50 published articles and 100 conference presentations. The more recent work includes: guest editor of a special issue of IJEIM on 'Innovative University Programs in Technology Business Incubation'; two books - 'Building Knowledge Regions in North America: Emerging Technology Innovation Poles' and 'Science & Technology Based Regional Entrepreneurship: Global Experience in Policy and Program Development' (both Edward Elgar). Mian's Journal of Business Venturing, Research Policy articles on university business incubation are among the most cited.

During his more than 25 years of academic experience he has frequently consulted with international bodies, governments, and industry.

Research

Dr. Mian’s research interests involve strategic management, technology and innovation policy, entrepreneurship and new ventures, university-industry linkages, technology business incubation, and technology transfer. In 2012, he received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities.
