How to apply to our MBA programs

SUNY Oswego uses an online application system that is self managed by the applicant. The complete list of requirements you need to apply to an MBA program is explained in detail. 

Official Transcript

Request an official transcript showing confirmation of a Bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 2.6 from your prior institution to be sent to: Division of Graduate Studies, 606 Culkin Hall, SUNY Oswego, Oswego, NY 13126. If you are a SUNY Oswego alum, your transcript will be automatically requested internally.

Purpose Statement

Indicate your purpose for applying to a graduate program. Follow the directions on the provided PDF and save your response as a .doc or .pdf file. You will upload the file to the online application system.

Two letters of recommendation

Professional recommendations are preferred to academic recommendations, and at least one recommendation should come from your immediate supervisor. If this isn't possible, a former supervisor can be used as a substitute. If you are applying to the five-year accounting program, your recommendations can be from faculty. The recommendation should support your application by providing specific details about your work experience and personal qualities.

The online application system utilizes a form to send a request directly to your reference. This person will then be able to submit the recommendation by following the provided email instructions. It is advised that you get in contact with the reference before sending a request.

GMAT test

A score of at least 500 is required for admission to SUNY Oswego. It is also important to note that the GMAT score is only one part of the decision process. The application essays, letters of recommendation, work experience and transcripts also play a significant role in the decision process. The GMAT has to be taken before you can be matriculated into an MBA program at SUNY Oswego.

To schedule a GMAT visit and select a location near you. Once you have chosen a location, you can schedule a GMAT exam appointment online, by phone, fax or by mail. Available time slots change continuously as people register for the GMAT, so you will need to confirm your time slot availability when you register.

The scores are good for five years. Please keep in mind that you have to wait 30 days before retaking the test. You want to take it early enough so that you have the opportunity to retake it if you need to. On test day, before you begin taking the GMAT, you will be given the opportunity to select up to five (5) programs to receive your score report. The fee to take the test covers the release of your scores only to the programs you selected at that time. It is important to note that once you have made the selections, you will not be given the opportunity to change them.

GMAT waiver eligibility 

There are instances where the MBA Program receives a request from an applicant to waive the GMAT requirement. The School of Business is AACSB accredited and takes any requests to deviate from standard admission very seriously; however, a waiver may be reasonable based on an applicant's education and credentials. Below are conditions in which a waiver of the GMAT will be considered: 

  • Terminal Graduate degree from an accredited university. This includes MD, DDS, DVM, JD.
  • MS or MA Degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • CPA, CFA, PE, or equivalent.

It should abe noted that a waiver of the GMAT is not a waiver of foundation courses that may be required. The School of Business reserves the right to approve or deny any waiver request regardless of criteria met. To qualify for a GMAT waiver, the applicant's transcripts will be reviewed to show proof of the graduate degree or official verification of the professional certification.
