Then: This undated archive photo titled "Life-Saving Corps, American Red Cross" appears to show Oswego Normal School students ready to throw themselves into Lake Ontario's waters to save swimmers if necessary. Oswego students and faculty have always been willing volunteers for community service projects and, when required, to become true life-savers. A major contribution has been donation of blood over the years through the American Red Cross Club's bloodmobile program. (Photo courtesy of Penfield Library Special Collections)
Now: The Student Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps serves as a rescue squad of its own, ready to help with emergencies day or night. Founded in 1972, SAVAC was the first on-campus student ambulance operation in the United States, and is still going strong today. From left are SAVAC members Jeff Rodman, Brett Dillon and Brian Wersebe, photographed at 2:23 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, as part of the college's recent 24 Hours in Photos project. (Tim Nekritz photo)
