Elementary and Secondary Teaching

In N.Y. State, economics is integrated throughout the curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Regents' program also mandates a one- semester high-school economics course. Most of the teachers currently teaching these courses, however, have never studied economics. An undergraduate major in economics can provide a useful background for both elementary and secondary teachers.

Permanent certification of teachers in N.Y. State requires a master's degree and a mix of education courses. The education courses may be acquired through an undergraduate double major in education, or through enrollment in a master's program in education or an MAT program in economics or social studies.
