Federal, State, and Local Government Positions![]() Many economics and applied mathematical economic majors have pursued careers in federal or state government positions. In the federal government, economists are hired by the Office of Management and Budget, the Treasury Department, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Commerce Department, the Bureau of the Census, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Congressional Budget Office, and many other government agencies. The Federal Reserve Board (technically not a government agency) also hires many economists. In N.Y. State, economics majors are often hired by the state labor department, Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Equalization and Assessment, and other state agencies. Higher-level government positions often require a graduate degree in economics. Individuals with a bachelor's degree are generally hired as research assistants (as the initial appointment). Students interested in pursuing a career in government service should attempt to include the following courses in their undergraduate coursework:
It is also important to acquire experience with database and statistical software. Strong communication skills are also essential.
